GNR's Alley Bump in Chicago: The Alley Capital of the World |

The city of Chicago is well-known and recognized as having the largest network of alleys in the world. Spanning 1,900 miles, Chicago's alleyways have not only shaped the city's culture, but have contributed to the structure and landscape of its downtown area. Home to dumpsters, animals, vehicles, and pedestrian passerby's, over 90% of the city's blocks are bisected by alleys.
These narrow streets are often busy and full of action. They act as playgrounds for local children, garbage routes that steer clear of the busy, traffic-driven main streets, parking lots for local housing, even a place for residents to meet and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Aside from the frequent community activity, these streets are often plagued by drive-through traffic attempting to find faster routes and avoid main roads. Speeding vehicles in these areas act as dangerous obstacles for pedestrians and local residents alike.
What can be done to reduce speeding and cut-through traffic in alleys?
Safety devices typically used on residential streets may not alleviate the problem. Posting speed limits, installing flashing lights and police enforcement are all solutions geared to prompt awareness. Unfortunately, drivers are not motivated to follow these devices, especially when driving among hidden roads and alleys.

In an attempt to decrease the number of drive-through vehicles, as well as to reduce the speed of those passing through, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) turned to GNR Technologies for a solution. Physical measures, primarily Speed Bumps, were chosen to address the ongoing problem. CDOT had compiled several studies comparing traditional asphalt speed bumps to recycled rubber speed bumps (Alley Bumps) manufactured by GNR Technologies. Alley Bumps, made from recycled rubber tires, were installed (often in multiple units) in several locations throughout Chicago alleys, slowing traffic to 1 - 5 mph. Included are in-molded, highly reflective highway tape with cat's eye reflectors to enhance visibility at night.
Easy, quick installation and transportation of the product significantly helped to reduce labor costs. The ability to remove, relocate, or store the Alley Bump if needed, also made this product extremely attractive. This aggressive device deterred drivers from using these roads as short-cuts, and those vehicles who continued to use these streets were forced to drive at lower speeds.
Keith Weaver (Traffic Calming Director for CDOT) was thrilled about how this product facilitated all of the above. Unlike asphalt, his crew was able to install the Alley Bump even on rainy days. Pedestrians and local residents are |
