Increasing Number of
Accidents in Parking Facilities - the Need for Immediate Solutions |
|
|
| - |
|
In
our March 2008
Newsletter issue, we discussed the dangers commonly found in
parking facilities and listed some headlines of accidents that had
occurred in
recent news. With the number of reported (and un-reported) cases on the
rise, there
is an increasing need for immediate solutions.
Below
are more headlines that made the news in the last two months alone:

How Can You Create Safer
Driving Environments? |
|
|
| - |
|
There
are a variety of products available in the market that can help
increase driver
awareness and ensure the safety of both pedestrians and drivers. The problem however, is finding highly
effective solutions that can be easily
and quickly installed.
There
are two main options available:
1. Visual Warning Signs
| What
They Are: |
Yield
or stop signs, flashing lights or pavement markings that are designed
to help
direct traffic and increase driver awareness in parking lots. |
| Advantage: |
They
can be installed with ease and in a short amount of time, usually at a
very
reasonable cost. |
|
 |
| Disadvantage: |
Unfortunately,
these solutions may not always work in parking facilities. Drivers may
not feel
obligated to follow these signs, and more importantly, these devices
can be
added distractions to drivers. |
2. Physical
Measures
| What
They Are: |
Speed
bumps, road bumps, or any other physical device installed on the road
surface
to help control traffic speeds in parking facilities. |
| Advantage: |
These
solutions force drivers to travel at the minimum, increasing awareness
and reaction
time in the event of an emergency. |
|

|
| Disadvantage: |
Depending
on the material used (typically concrete or asphalt), ideal weather
conditions
and parking lot closures may be necessary; they can also be costly
investments. |
|
So What Is The Best
Solution? |
|
 |
